Blessed

Hello Sweet Friends,

Thank you so much for all of your kind comments regarding the Waldo Canyon Fire here in Colorado.   I am happy to report that as of this evening, 17 days after it began, the fire is 100% contained.  Almost 350 homes were lost, but almost 2700 were saved in one neighborhood alone.  The firefighters from not only our local area, but from all over the western states, battled in unimaginable conditions but they fought hard and did such a fabulous job to keep this fire from spreading.  It is truly a miracle and watching the community come together in support of the families who were affected and the firefighters that worked so hard was so heartwarming.  It still hurts to see photos like this where entire streets were almost completely destroyed, but our town is strong and we will recover.

One week after the firestorm came over the mountains and into Colorado Springs, the rains began.  We had the most beautiful double full rainbow.  How could you not feel hopeful after seeing something like this.

I've been wanting to do some all white crosses for a while now.  My own personal take on the Jeanne d'Arc style, if you will.  After the fire seemed to be getting under control, I just felt like the time had come.  I did a couple all whites (with a little gold) and a very soft shabby chic cross.  I think they turned out lovely and I hope you think so too.  They are headed to the gallery where I have my mosaic work displayed for sale later this week.

On another happy note, I am pleased as punch to let you know that one of my photos was selected for the Miscellany section of the summer edition of Somerset Life.  This is one of the prettiest issues yet and it has features from some of our favorite bloggers, Michelle of Petite Michelle Louise and Susan of Evelyn and Rose.  What a dream come true for me.

Well dear bloggie friends, I see by the old clock on the wall that it is time for this little blogger to go to bed.  I'll be sharing this over at Kathleen's Faded Charm for White Wednesday.  Come by and check out all the dreamy posts for yourself.

Until next time,

Guest Post~French Nordic Design

Hi Bloggie Friends,

Today's feature is a guest post from Mari at Design Shuffle.  She is going to discuss one of my favorite looks, the French Nordic style.  Thanks to Jeanne d'Arc Living and other similar publications, this style is hot, hot, hot.  I can't seem to get enough of it, and I know many of you feel the same.  So, enjoy this little bit of eye candy today.  Take it away Mari...

Hello, everyone! It's Mari here from Design Shuffle, a fabulous online portal for interior designers and all things interior design. One of the things I love best about writing guest posts for Design Shuffle is getting to visit amazing design and decorating blogs like French Laundry to share some of my favorite decorating ideas.

Today's post is about the beautiful French Nordic look—part French style, part Nordic appeal and all white and gray loveliness. When it comes to this charming style, there is no such thing as just a touch is enough—once one is smitten, there is no turning back. Each and every space in the home must be decorated in the desirable French Nordic style—an exciting never ending adventure. Here's a glimpse into the world of the French Nordic look. We hope you will enjoy these eight inspiring images.

This lovely vignette is brought to us Jeanne d'Arc Living, the magazine that showcases all things French Nordic. On every issue are the words, "Lifestyle in a Class of its Own."

When going for a bedroom design in the French Nordic style, consider a lovely combination of pure white linens mixed with grays, taupes and greiges.

Here's another space from Jeanne d'Arc Living—an appealing mix of white slipcovers and rustic textiles. You probably have noticed that angels' wings are often seen in French Nordic rooms.

This photo is full of dining room design ideas. It is a slightly Americanized version of Nordic French style with the quintessential black and white sign in English not French. I love the soft cotton slipcovers on the dining chairs.

Live plants, such as vines and topiaries are often seen in French Nordic rooms. Antique mirrors and distressed shutters add an appealing aged feel to this corner vignette.

This light and airy dining space is all about the French Nordic look in interior design, from the white painted floor to the restrained size of the crystal and iron chandelier. Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8

Thanks Mari!  As I have said before on my blog, my style is a little fussier and far more cluttered than the traditional JDL look, but I still enjoy incorporating elements of that style into my decor.  Zinc (or faux zinc) is a must have in this look and there are many ways to pull it into your interior.  The beautiful French zinc plant pots are great, but a bit pricey.  If they aren't affordable, try a new metal container and give it a faux zinc finish (yes, I do still need to do that tutorial-note to self).  I found this cutie pie at Goodwill for $1 or so, gave it the finish I wanted, then added a faux enamel tag tied on with twine.  You can find the tutorial for the tags here.

Simplicity really is the key with this look...a pretty paper doily, a page from an antique book, one of my faux zinc crosses with torn muslin bow, stuck on the wall with a push pin; what could be easier?

Of course,  part of the serene beauty of this look is the incorporation of some religious elements, if that is your desire.

Even if your decor is less rustic, you can still blend this look in.  Beautiful French mirrors look great when paired with some more primitive elements like this one from Atelier de Campagne.

I have the ubiquitous antique grain sack pillow and the white slipcovered couch in my living room as well as some pretty French tables, but as you can see in the rest of the photo, I also have other elements that aren't typically associated with the French Nordic look like the sort of fussy hand painted lamp and tole tray. Still, it works.  In other parts of my home, I have Victorian furniture that I inherited from my great aunt, an early American salt glazed crock collection from my days in New England, my slightly goofy Victorian hoof pincushion collection, and my husband's Native American drums.  Eclectic, oui?

Then there's the collection of 1940-60's rhinestone clocks (just a few represented here...).

Basically, if you are all about one particular style and you are able to achieve that, then I say go for it.  If, like most of us, you are forced by economics and sentiment to live with what you already have and make little modifications here and there as your tastes change or you add new "loves" , then always follow your heart.  I believe, as others have said as well, that if you live with what you love, no matter how disparate it may seem, it will somehow all come together to make a style that is truly your own.  I think if you are true to yourself, there will be some element, whether it is color or shape, texture or feeling, that will tie everything together and make it work.  So don't be afraid to mix it up!

Mary, did you know...

Hello Friends, I hope you are all well and happy and enjoying this beautiful season.  I was so behind in my decorating I really was feeling a need to keep it simple yet appropriate to the season.  I went out shopping a little before Thanksgiving and just the sheer volume of  "stuff" on the shelves and the tinsel-y shininess and the hustle and bustle made me want to run out of the stores and take a shower to wash off the dirt of the conspicious consumerism.  I don't know if it's my age or what, but it really bothered me this year.  SO, I decided to do a revisit of my last year's mantel and tweek it a bit taking a cue from some favorite things that put the emphasis on the reason for the season.

I had coveted admired the amazing Jeanne d'Arc angel wings, but the $95 price tag was not even remotely in my budget. I happened to be looking at Oriental Trading Company's catalog and came across their angel wings for a whopping $14.99 with shipping. Now, I have to say, they compared in no way to the JDL wings, but with a little help from a bag of white mirabou feathers from Michael's (another $2.99 I think), they are good enough for me. I clipped the elastic things that hold them on your arms because I couldn't see a way to get them out of my way to hang them, then wrapped them in wide double faced satin ribbon that I washed to remove the sizing so the bow would hang nicer (floppier). All in all, I'm happy with the result although if anyone has a giveaway on those spendy JDL wings, let me know cause I'm in! :-)

As I was working on my wings, I had Christmas music on and heard one of my favorite songs, "Mary, Did You Know?".  I was inspired to take some of my favorite lines from that song and put them on simple hang tags.  I added a little glitter around the edges since the tags just needed a little more "somethin, somethin".  Of course, my JDL madonna had to come out to say hello as well.

A relatively simple white poinsettia garland that I had on hand made a nice addition when paired with the fairy light string I made last year out of little coffee dyed tiny muffin baking cups.

My JDL inspired candles returned this year and couldn't have been a nicer addition given the theme.

Antique mercury glass also back for a repeat performance...looks perfect with the Pottery Barn votives that were very reasonable at I think $3.50.

I recently purchased a couple of gorgeous, very old prayer cards that featured the baby Jesus.  I wanted to feature them on my big pillar candle but couldn't chance ruining the original, so I made a copy of it on a nice cardstock and went over the gilt scrolls with my gold paint pen.  I've done this on other reproductions of old pieces and it gives it that authentic look that I love.  I don't think anyone would be the wiser.  I punched a couple of holes in my card for my jute twine to go through so it would stay relatively flat and tied it up over a layer of old crocheted lace for a nice layered effect.

Lastly, one of my favorite mirrors that usually sits on the mantel was moved to the wall and I added the heart cut from a German book topped with one of my faux zinc crosses and some greenery.  I love the simplicity of it.

There are still some crosses available in my Etsy shop, Elegant Farmhouse.

More fun with copies of pages from the German book...

One of my nativity sets that my husband got me soon after we married.  I love it.  It is a great visual of the reason for the season, the birth of Jesus.

I'll show you more of my decor soon, but for now, I think that's enough photo overload. I'm sharing the goods this week with Kathleen at Faded Charm and her wonderful White Wednesday Party, Kim at her Wow Us Wednesday Party, Debra at Vintage Inspiration Friday, Courtney at Feathered Nest Friday, and Bev at Pink Saturday.  Go over and show the other participants some blogger love, won't ya?

Zinc Ornaments..or ARE they???

UPDATE:  Faux zinc ornaments are now up on my Etsy shop. Victorian ones will be up Monday night.

Let's just be clear on one thing...I love zinc.  Old, weathered zinc makes my heart sing.  Even if the look is a little rustic for my Victorian "looks like Grandma's house" home, I try to get a little Jeanne d'Arc here and there wherever I can sneak it in.  As you probably know though, cool antique shaped objects like crosses don't exactly fall from the sky.  With this in mind, I decided to make my own zinc Christmas ornaments.  I think these large ornaments turned out pretty darn cute, what do you think?  And they really look just like zinc.  But what are they you ask?  They are paper mache.  Yep, paper mache.  I had one at work the other day and my coworker swore they were at the very least, some kind of metal.  Then I handed it over to her and was she ever surprised.  I made several up and I will get them in my Etsy shop this weekend in case you love them as much as I do.  I will do a tutorial just as soon as I get a chance; I foresee myself using this little technique many times and I'd love to share it with you.

I also made  some of these beauties and foofed them up with 2 or 3 different paints, images, glitter, lace, and whatever else struck my fancy.  I'll have them up in my shop this weekend also.  I got the idea for these from the Christmas issue of Jeanne d'Arc Living.  It really is a nice issue (yes, aren't they all, right?)-lots of serene decorating ideas.

Most of my images, including the ones you see here, are from the Graphics Fairy.  Thank you, Karen for such great material to work with.

Until next time,

Helping Celebrate 100 White Wednesdays!

I don't know about you, but I am amazed at Kathleen over at Faded Charm...for the last 100 Wednesdays, she has hosted the most fun blog party around, White Wednesday.  That's quite a feat, or as someone who has a blog called French Laundry should say, a "tour de force".  I thought in honor of this, I would do a little retrospective of a photo from each White Wednesday I had participated in (22 in all-seems kinda puny in light of 100 posts, but that's why she's AMAZING and we're all helping her celebrate.  I've shown pictures of my mantel (lots of times...but hey, I like it!).

Statues have been a favorite, along with pretty lacy things, and Jeanne d'Arc Living inspiration...

I've shared some craftiness...

And some shopping tresors from my antiquing jaunts...

We've shown our whites on holidays...

And it wouldn't be White Wednesday without the occasional piece of ironstone...

And, this still remains, my favorite WW post when I did a couple of mosaics of pretty white things I found around my house.

Kathleen, hats off to you gal, you've been faithful and oh so consistent.  Thanks for making WW THE event of the week.  We should be giving you gifts, but instead, sweet Kathleen is giving US a chance to win her most amazing 100th post giveaway.  All sorts of beautiful gifts for a lucky blogger.  I am getting all excited just thinking about it.  Click here to be taken there.
This week is going to be one heck of a party!
